Vacancy: Chair of Council

The British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education (BAC) seeks to appoint a highly experienced education specialist as Chair of the Council to continue the vision and growth promoted by the current Chair, Dominic Scott OBE, whose tenure expires in September 2022.

The new Chair will lead a small but highly experienced and passionate group of Council members (current trustee bios) and will work closely as mentor and critical friend to the Chief Executive and her dedicated staff team to deliver the new BAC five year strategy: investing in growth; continuing to grow and diversify; actively engaging in its ethical responsibilities; further developing its integrated use of data and information; and to continue to promote and be active in the quality assurance community.

BAC was founded in 1984 adapting over the years to regulatory changes and today BAC has a key role in accrediting independent HE/FE education and training providers and supporting the short-term study visa regulatory framework. Internationally, BAC continues to see increasing demand for its accreditation activities. As a charitable institution, BAC has specific responsibilities to meet its charitable objectives.

Location: BAC is based in London and the role would entail regular contact with the Chief Executive, her staff and attendance at London based meetings.

Time commitment: The Council meet three times a year. The Chair of the Council also chairs the Standing Committee who meet more regularly in between Council meetings, approximately six times a year. Council members are invited to attend the annual BAC Stakeholder Event and occasional miscellaneous events.

Voluntary: While there is no renumeration for this role, reasonable expenses are paid.

  • Previous experience as a Chair, Trustee or Governor (or similar board level) of a UK charity or public body
  • Experience of strategic and financial leadership
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, independent further or higher education/training providers
  • Knowledge/experience of quality assurance issues, ideally in the UK and internationally
