FIND A COLLEGE
Health and safety matters
10 March 2011, led by Dr Edward Ferrett.
10.30 - 16.00 at 44 Bedford Row, London WC1R 4LL
The aim of this seminar is to provide colleges with an up-to-date overview of health and safety law and the requirements that this places on colleges. Areas covered will include:
- Why colleges should be aware of Health and Safety law
- Basic Health and Safety Law
- Health and Safety at Work Act
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- Other relevant topics: Fire prevention, First Aid, Accident Reporting and
Investigation, Accident Prevention Strategies, Hazardous Substances, Electricity,
Violence against Staff, Purchase of Equipment
In the afternoon, there will be a practical session on Risk Assessment and College Safety Policy to give participants hands-on experience of assessing Health and Safety issues. Health and Safety is notable as one of the key areas which cause colleges to be refused accreditation but where issues are often easy to rectify.
A recent participant in this seminar said: “I definitely feel better informed now and more confident – responsibility for Health and Safety in my workplace seemed like a big weight on my shoulders”.
Dr Ferrett is an engineer and a former HEFCE inspector, a BAC Inspector and Fellow of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health. He is Vice Chairman of NEBOSH, the National Examination Board for Occupational Safety and Health, and joint author of two best-selling books on the subject.
