Structure and Governance
BAC is governed by its Council which comprises individuals and nominees of stakeholder organisations who are closely involved in maintaining education standards. The Council meets twice each year, normally in May and November. The Chairman of Council is Mr Tim Cox.
For practical purposes, Council gives delegated authority to two Committees which monitor and implement BAC's work:
- The Executive Committee, which has the same responsibilities as the Board of Directors in a commercial company, provides strategic direction for BAC. The Committee meets approximately five times a year.
- The Accreditation Committee, which receives the reports of inspections and takes decisions on the award or withdrawal of accreditation. It also regularly reviews the criteria used by inspectors. The current Chair of the Committee is Mrs Diane Billam. The Committee meets approximately five times each year.
BAC's inspection force comprises around 70 experienced and well-qualified, independent inspectors from a rich variety of educational backgrounds. Within the force exist a smaller number of key Reporting Inspectors, or RIs. Each inspection team includes at least one RI, who is responsible for producing the Inspection Report which is presented to the Accreditation Committee. While every report puts forward the RI's recommendation on accreditation, the ultimate decision remains with the Committee.
Our Committees and Inspectors are supported by the core team of administrative staff at our Head Office in London. Led by the Chief Executive, Dr Stephen Vickers, the staff are responsible for the day-to-day business of BAC, including management of inspections, oversight of our accredited colleges and communications with the public and sector.
